Over A Million Will Be Denied Admission In Nigeria This Year

 

The federal government has stated that over 1 million candidates that sat for the University  Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on Saturday, may not gain admission into the nation's tertiary institutions due to inadequate capacity.

The Minister of Education, Professor (Mrs) Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufai, made this known at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday while invigilating the UTME, that the current capacity of tertiary institution across the country is only about 500,000.

This she notes can not cater for 1.7 million candidates sitting for the UTME.

Professor Rufai who bemoaned the gross inadeuate number of universities in the country appealed for more public private partnership for the establishment of more institutions to increase access to university education in Nigeria.

She made the plea noting that the growing number of students who enroll for admission into tertiary institution annually is alarming as revealed by the number of students sitting for this year's UTME.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced that over 1.7 million candidates registered for the UTME , an increased of 13.35% compared to previous years.

According to the Minister, there is space for only one-third of these applicants and the remaining candidates, who may attain the cutoff grade may even not get admitted.

Sex Bribe To Fix Matches

The act fixing matches seems to be taking another toll as the perpetrator is no longer interested in money to maneuver a match, but sex. 

Report from Lebanon had it that referees are demanding for sex to fix matches.

According to Reuter, three Lebanese referees have been charged for accepting sexual bribes from three women to fix an Asian Football Confederation Cup match. Trials have been scheduled for 10-14 June.

FIFA-recognized referee Ali Sabbagh and assistants Ali Eid and Abdallah Taleb has allegedly agreed to influence the result of the 3 April match between Singapore's Tampines Rovers and East Bengal of India, and were hastily replaced hours before kick-off by AFC.

The three,  who denied the charges against them, face a maximum fine of $100,000 and five-year prison term if found guilty.

They are currently being held at Changi prison and denied bail for security reasons.

Calling Thatcher a prostitute insult sex workers: Numsa

Today, the Late Britain prime minister Magraret Thatcher was caricatured at the National Union Of Metalworkers of SA's bargaining conference in Pretoria.

Numsa's Second deputy president Christina Oliver, told members to refrain from referring to Thatcher as " the prostitute".

Saying, " It's an insult to sex workers. Using the word prostitute as a term of abuse is deeply offensive to sex workers, whose interests Numsa took to an interest in arguing for, " she said.

"It implies that  they are collectively at par with the reactionary Thatcher than members of the working class. So, comrade [from] KZN [Kwazulu-Natal] may you use another word when you refer to Margaret Thatcher".

Olivier's remark was visited with laughter and applause from the members.

Death awaits kidnappers in Delta, Governors voted 

The House of Assembly's of Nigeria's southern state of Delta, majorly known for being the cynosure of kidnappers, on Wednesday in Asaba voted into law the measure to combat the kidnapping escapades in the region. The anti-kidnapping bill 2013, impose a death sentence on any person convicted of kidnapping in the state.

The law was passed without Governor Emmanuel Uduagha's assent. Uduagha withheld his assent because he suggested life imprisonment rather than a death sentence.

Ignoring their governor's objection, the Assembly mustered a two-thirds of the members to support the passage of the bill into law.

After much consideration and scrutiny, India's Supreme Court has finally granted popular Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt four weeks to finish his multiple film projects and other activities he has in the pipeline before going behind bars to serve his jail sentence for a weapon conviction linked to the Mumbai bombing in 1993.

Indian Court Gives Bollywood Star A Month To Surrender

Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt, sentenced to five years in jail for illegal possession  of weapon that were part of the arms consignment used in bombing in Mumbai in 1993 that claimed 257 lives of their citizenry.

Dutt, 53-year-old, had appealed to the court to defer his sentence by six months to enable him complete pending film project estimated to be worth 2.5 million rupees ($46.3 million)


The court declined his appeal and ordered Dutt, who has been on bail since 2007 after serving 18 months in jail, to surrender by April 18. He will have to go back and serve the remaining three-and-a-half years in jail.

$8 billion to build a Nigeria oil refinery with a capacity of around 400,000 barrels a day by late 2016.
